Can we talk about Beetlejuice bangs?

TextAlex Peters

Alexa Demie, Billie Eilish, Bella Hadid and now Beyoncé have been spotted rocking the jagged micro fringe

Baby goth Lydia Deetz and her spiky baby bangs and tousled, backcombed updo are turning out to be quite the beauty inspiration for the fashion girls. The look first began to creep into our lives back in February when Alexa Demie sported a sharp pointy fringe for The Cut’s Euphoria cast shoot. Courtesy of Evanie Frausto, the jet black hair and jagged, separated fringe couldn’t help but be compared to the iconic Beetlejuice hairstyle.

Hot on the heels of Demie came Billie Eilish, who swapped her platinum blonde hair for black at the Grammys in April. The piecey, blunt fringe and spiky 90s updo screamed Lydia Deetz, as did the hairstyle Eilish wore for the Met Gala the following month. While the bangs were perhaps on the wispier side, the back was certainly spikey enough to draw comparisons to the Winona Ryder character – and many people did just that

The tributes don’t stop there though. Yesterday, Beyoncé revealed her latest cover with British Vogue, ahead of new music arriving next month. Photographed by Rafael Pavarotti, the shoot sees the regal singer pose on various props including a huge disco ball and a horse. In one image, hairstylist Jawara has given the singer a very uneven, zig-zag fringe. Amidst the absolute opulence of the gilded and crystal-encrusted Schiaparelli Haute Couture coat and earrings, the fringe brings a nice, edgier contrast. A mix between Beetlejuice and the haircut a toddler might give themselves if handed a pair of scissors.

While there has been a sudden influx of Lydia Deetz hair this year, the look has proved an inspiration for the fashion world before. For its A/W 2020 runway show, Haider Ackermann sent Bella Hadid down the catwalk in a huge black bouffant wig with a very spiky baby fringe. The look was completed with bleached-out eyebrows and a ghostly complexion.
