Billie Eilish has spoken out about Texas’ near-total abortion ban, saying “I really wish men cared more”.
The state’s so-called ‘heartbeat bill’ (also known as Senate Bill 8) bans abortion after six weeks of pregnancy – once a foetal heartbeat is detected – even in cases of rape or incest. At six weeks, many women don’t even realise they’re pregnant.
Writing on Instagram Stories on Friday (3 September), Eilish reshared a number of posts criticising the bill. She also shared her frustration at seeing how few men have spoken out about the ruling.
“I’m so fucking tired,” Eilish wrote on Instagram stories. “Makes me sick how many men say nothing when it comes to women’s rights.”
As per Insider, she also reposted an image that read: “If you and your ‘homies’ or bros’ aren’t talking about the abortion laws in Texas, chances are you’re part of a problem.”
Other celebrities have also taken to social media to speak about the bill. Lizzo, who grew up in Texas, shared an Instagram Live saying: “You have the right to do what you want to do, but the people who are making laws need to stay the fuck out of people’s bodies’ business.”
Speaking at a virtual press conference last week, Vanessa Rodriguez, the call centre manager of Planned Parenthood’s Greater Texas branch, said: “It’s heartbreaking to tell someone that they don’t have a choice. People are scared and they look to us for answers.”
“My heart is broken that we have to tell them that Texas politicians are taking away their right to make the decision – the decision that they feel is the right one for themselves and their families,” she added. ”But we are dedicated to helping people no matter what – we have prepared additional resources and support for patients, and we will continue to support and educate our communities and each other along the way.”
