2021’s Dazed 100 is a global celebration of next-gen names leading change in their communities and across their fields, curated with a little help from Dazed 100-ers of years gone by. This year, it runs as part of Open To Change, a far-reaching partnership between Dazed and Converse to increase opportunities, education and representation in the creative industries.
This is about the future; every name on 2021’s line up has been instrumental in enacting change in their field and looking at what’s next for the creative industries. Each entrant was asked, “How will you shape the future?” with Converse supporting the winning project with a $30,000 fund and mentor sessions to bring their idea to life. After weeks of public voting and getting to know this year’s cohort, Dazed and Converse are delighted to announce Afro-Brazilian artist and hair stylist Janice Mascarenhas as 2021’s winner.

Winner: Janice Mascarenhas
With the Converse x Dazed100 fund, Janice will create an art film exploring the ancestry of Black hair through a Brazilian perspective, fusing futurism and tradition through the language of beauty. In the film, a robot they have built using clay, hair, and reused fabric will tell the story of how braids arrived in Brazil.
