Julian Assange is set to add another string to his bow with a catwalk appearance at London Fashion Week this September. Ben Westwood, son of Vivienne, is holding a show at the Ecuadorian embassy and has cast the Wikileaks founder as a star model.
"Julian’s been in the embassy for two years and it’s important that he doesn’t slip into obscurity," Westwood told the Independent. "I want to highlight Julian Assange’s plight. What happened to him is totally unfair.”
Assange has been holed up at the Ecuadorian embassy for two years in a bid to avoid extradition to Sweden, where he is wanted for questioning on allegations of rape and sexual assault – allegations which he vehemently denies.
The Australian whistleblower has even inspired some of the clothes for Westwood's collection, with a point of reference being Assange's "combat beret look". Westwood has also promised another garment with a "Julian Assange print", with the soundtrack provided by the score from The Good, The Bad and The Ugly.
No-one asked us, but we always thought that Julian Assange was more Marks and Spencer catalogue-chic than catwalk fodder. But if you fancy seeing Assange on the runway, look out for him this September.
